Swimming restrictions relaxed at Windsor beach

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has eased restrictions at a local beach after its water was re-tested.

The health unit announced Friday that after a re-test, bacteria levels at Sandpoint Beach in east Windsor had fallen enough for the beach to be upgraded to a "code yellow".

Sandpoint had been closed by the health unit earlier in the week after an abnormally-high amount of E.coli bacteria was found in samples obtained through its weekly testing program. The re-test revealed E.coli levels at 344, down from 1,000 earlier in the week.

The health unit, however, does not recommend swimming at Sandpoint Beach, as elevated bacteria levels may still cause stomach or digestive issues.

Bacteria levels at the seven other public beaches in Windsor-Essex were in the "green" zone, meaning swimming is permitted for the weekend.
