Windsor Salt ratification vote stalled

Workers at Windsor Salt have reportedly rejected the tentative deal put forward last week.

On Wednesday morning, union members began voting on the tentative agreement reached between the bargaining committee representing Unifor Local 1959 and 240, and Windsor Salt on July 20.

Later the same afternoon, Local 240 said members have turned down the deal.

“We respect our members democratic right and their vote,” said Unifor Local 240 in a social media post. “We will be communicating the next steps when we have determined what that will be.”

The unions represent three units at the mine. Mine workers, represented by Local 1959 were first to vote, followed by the two other groups represented by Local 240, which includes fine salt and office workers.

Local 240 said the meetings have since been put on hold while the bargaining committees continue to work through the “dynamics and legalities” of the deal.

No update as to when the voting will continue has been indicated.

The union went on strike on February 17.
