U of W to limit course details on website

With fall classes beginning next week, the University of Windsor has taken steps to ensure the safety of faculty, staff, and students.

U of W has joined other universities across Ontario in removing specific course details from its public website, such as the location, the instructor's name, and other information.

The information will now be available to those using the password-protected portion of the school's website, according to a statement sent to WindsorNewsToday.ca.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff, the University of Windsor has taken a proactive step and refined public accessibility to course-related information," read the statement. "We are working to ensure that specific details such as classroom locations and instructor identities are only accessible on password-protected UWindsor web pages. This adjustment is consistent with recent actions taken by other Ontario universities."

The move comes after a 24-year-old international student, targeting a specific gender studies class, attacked two students and the professor with a knife at the University of Waterloo on June 28. All were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to a wire report in the Toronto Star, a handful of universities have already restricted the course information available to the general public. The University of Toronto and York University have already done so, and the University of Guelph is in the process. Toronto Metropolitan University, formerly Ryerson, does not make that information public.

U of W's public website currently offers general information on its programs, campus, and contact information for faculty. Students, staff, and faculty access course-specific information with their university-issued accounts.
