Bachetti to propose Tecumseh cenotaph honour Afghan War vets

Tecumseh's Deputy Mayor said the unveiling of a painting depicting the Battle of Dieppe inspired him to propose changes to the cenotaph in Tecumseh.

Joe Bachetti will ask town councillors to consider adding an inscription honouring Afghan War veterans during Tuesday night's meeting. The proposal will come in a notice of motion calling on the town's administrative staff to investigate the cost.

"The request is that council look at endorsing this in principle and having a report come back from the administration on what are the things that we can do," said Bachetti.

The cenotaph honours veterans of both world wars and the Korean conflict, but so far, bears no mention of the war that took 158 Canadian lives between 2001 and 2014.

"We do have a councillor in the Town of Tecumseh who's an Afghan War veteran, Councillor James Dorner," noted Bachetti while mentioning his counterpart in LaSalle, Mike Akpata, who also fought in Afghanistan.

Corporal Andrew Grenon of Windsor died in the war in 2008. The Windsor man was 23.

Bachetti doubts there's time to add an inscription before this year's Remembrance Day ceremonies but speculated it might be ready for May 9, the day Canada honours its Afghan War veterans.
