Four local paramedics receive high honours

The Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs is recognizing 166 paramedics across the province for their years of service, including four at the Essex Windsor EMS.

Daniel Metcalfe, Dawn Arsenault, Sarah Stromme, and Stephanie Simetic received the Governor General's Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Medal during a ceremony on September 28.

The association bestows the medal on paramedics who have served at least 20 years. They can be actively working, retired, or deceased.

"To qualify, at least ten years of service must have been on duty in the field, whether on the street or in the air, involving potential risk to the individual," said the association's release.

The medal was created in 1994 by the late Governor General Romeo LeBlanc, and 3,338 paramedics have received the honour since its inception.
