Health unit launches online assessment tool for measles

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) has created an option to help those worried about measles to decide on their next step.

The health unit has launched a new online assessment tool, as reports of potential measles exposures are received almost daily.

Residents concerned about measles exposure may use the tool to determine their risk of getting the disease and find treatment options to keep any mild symptoms from becoming serious, or even life-threatening.

"As a result of our region’s high vaccination rates, the next steps for those exposed to the virus are simple for most," said Windsor-Essex Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mehdi Aloosh. "Things get more complex for those who are unimmunized or under-immunized. This new tool will be an asset to those who are unsure if they should be staying home, calling our office, or moving along with their day-to-day lives after being exposed to measles in a community setting."

Aloosh continued to stress the benefits of vaccination. Anyone born before 1970, or has had two doses of the MMR vaccine, is considered immune. Those who are not sure of their immunity status should check with their healthcare provider.

You can use the online assessment, and get the latest information on exposure points, on the health unit's official website.
