The Town of Amherstburg plans to plant 350 trees, so it's looking for financial help from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
The town has applied for a grant under the FCM Green Municipalities Fund.
Last year, town council declared 2025 The Year of the Tree. It conducted a street tree inventory in 2017 and adopted the Tree Canopy and Natural Vegetation Protection and Enhancement Policy.
Using GIS mapping tools, the town prioritized urban areas of Amherstburg for the planting of trees on street boulevards and in front of homes that don't have one. All the areas are on public property.
They'll plant Sugar Maple, Red Oak, Tulip Tree, London Plane, Kentucky Coffee, and Hackberry species. No more than ten per cent of each species will be planted in one area to ward off disease and pests.
The town estimates each tree will cost $550, and the total cost of the project is $250,000. The town's portion of that is $74,564, and any remaining funds will come out of the 2026 and 2027 budgets.
