More investments to prevent flooding

The City of Windsor will be installing rain catchers on around 1,000 sanitary maintenance hole covers.

The project is part of the Sewer and Coastal Flood Protection Master Plan.

“The City of Windsor is committed to ending basement flooding, and we are working deliberately and strategically to realize that goal through key projects and initiatives identified in the Sewer and Coastal Flood Protection Master Plan,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

The devices will be installed in low-lying high-risk areas to prevent storm water from entering the sanitary sewer system. This reduces the likelihood of flooding, sewer overflows and treatment plant bypasses.

"Flooding has been a real concern for families and homeowners in Windsor," said Andrew Dowie, Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor–Tecumseh. "This funding will help the City take practical steps to reduce the risk of basement flooding and protect our neighbourhoods. It's about making sure our infrastructure keeps up with the challenges of today’s climate, while also caring for our Great Lakes."

The Ontario government is investing $271,000 towards the project while the City of Windsor is contributing around $96,000.
