Detroit's population rises for the third year in a row

Windsor's American neighbour has continued to grow in population.

According to the latest population figures released on Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, Detroit added about 5,000 residents during 2025. It was the third year in a row that the Motor City increased its population.

Detroit's population is 649,095, a less than 1 per cent increase from 2024.

"Three years of consecutive population growth shows very clearly that Detroit is a place more people want to live and that its best days are ahead of it," said Mayor Mary Sheffield in a statement. "My administration is laser-focused right now on continuing our population growth by building more housing, including 1,000 new single-family homes over the next four years, and by being a city that supports the needs of existing residents and new Detroiters alike."

The City said housing development and new construction helped fuel the population increase.

The current trend of population growth in Detroit reversed decades of decline. At its peak in the early 1950s, Detroit's population flirted with the two-million mark.

The exodus of residents to the suburbs during the 1950s and 1960s was accelerated following the deadly riot of 1967. Detroit's population dipped below the one-million benchmark at the 2000 Census.

The Detroit Free Press reported on Thursday evening that the City was expected to go to court on Friday for the latest hearing in a dispute with the Census Bureau. Detroit has claimed that the Census Bureau used a methodology that intentionally undercounted the city's residents.

At issue are the results of the 2020 Census, which listed Detroit's population as 639,111, a 10.54 per cent decline from 2010.
