Statscan: Crop Receipts Down, Livestock Receipts Up

Crop receipts for Canadian farmers were down in the first 9 months of this year - the first drop in that period since 2010.

Statistics Canada says they were off 3 and a half per cent from last year's receipts.

However, livestock receipts were up 15 point 5 per cent.

The net result was a 2 point 6 per cent increase in overall farm cash receipts for Canadian farmers in the January to September period.

The agency says a 9 point 2 per cent decline in farm cash receipts in the first quarter of 2014 was followed by a 12 point 4 per cent increase in the second quarter and a 7 point 7 per cent increase in the third quarter.

Program payments for the first three quarters were down almost 31 per cent, led by a more than 40 per cent reduction in crop insurance payments.

Statscan says that's the third consecutive decline in program payments for the January to September period.

Farm cash receipts in Ontario were up 1 point 3 per cent from the same period last year.

The biggest increase was Manitoba's 5 point 6 per cent, while Nova Scotia's 14 point 3 per cent drop was the biggest provincial decline.
