American Farmers Optimistic About Their Future

U-S farmer optimism about prices and the future has returned.

That's according to DTN/The Progressive Farmer's latest Agriculture and Agribusiness Confidence Index.

Producers' overall confidence climbed to 103 point 4 in December.

It was 99 point 8 in September.

A 100 rating is considered neutral - over 100 indicates optimism while ratings under 100 indicate pessimism.

The overall rating is a combination of how American farmers feel about their current situation and their future potential.

Compared to previous surveys, the December rating of current conditions has fallen from just over 137 two years ago to just over 113 this year.

But American farmers are more confident about their future than they were in August - that rating has gone from 87 point 8 to 97 in the most recent survey.

Crop producers confidence was 101 point 9 in December - up from 96 point 3 in September - but still lower than last December's 104 point 3.

U-S livestock producer confidence is at 106 point 4 - lower than March's 116 point 4 - but higher than September's 108 point 7.

On a different scale, the DTN survey had 71 per cent of all producers believing their current net farm income will get better or stay the same.

That's down 10 points from a year ago.
