Using Horses For Physiotherapy

A Barrie area woman says if it wasn't for her horse, she probably wouldn't be walking today.

In 2011, Trina Maus had an accident when another horse she was riding fell on top of her. Her one leg was completely crushed and doctors told her the leg would have to be amputated.

But Maus and her family found a Toronto doctor who was willing to try and after eight hours of surgery the leg was saved. Maus says she rode her horse Lou as a form of physiotherapy.

"So I actually said to my doctor, 'Let me get back on a horse cause I know if I get back on a horse the movement of the horse will help mimic walking, will help build my core strength and my muscles so when it comes time for me to walk again, it would be an easier transition.' I was right," laughs Maus.

Maus rode Lou during her pregnancy with triplets, who are all doing fine. She even recovered enough to compete in show jumping competitions at the Royal Winter Fair.

Trina Maus was a speaker at Horse Day at Grey Bruce Farmers Week in Elmwood.
