Wellington Cattlemen Hand Out Award, Discuss Markets

High market prices for beef cattle haven't meant big growth for the beef sector.

That's according to Rob Unsworth, the Beef Farmers of Ontario Advisory Councillor for Wellington County.

Unsworth says because of the costs cattlemen are facing, many are seeing no real change in their final margins.

In fact, he suggests some cattlemen are actually seeing smaller margins now than they were a couple of years ago.

Unsworth was part of the Wellington County Beef Farmers recent annual meeting.

He also expressed his support for the concept of a cow-calf industry in Northern Ontario.

Unsworth says it's a 20 year project the industry needs to be able to replenish the provincial cattle herd.

15 year old Justin Swanston of Elora was given the Ron Wooddisse Memorial Award for Most Improved Beef Farmer during that meeting.

Unsworth says a solid year for the beef sector didn't produce much growth.
