OFA Welcomes Tighter Farm License Plate Rules

Ontario Federation of Agriculture President Don McCabe says it's a good change.

He's referring to new provincial regulations requiring anyone buying or attaching farm license plates to a new vehicle show proof they have a farm business.

Those changes stem from concerns from the Ontario Auditor General that the old system could be vulnerable to abuses.

McCabe says the new regs mean only qualified farmers can access farm plates and the benefits associated with having that designation.

The new rules only apply to new farm plate registrations - they don't affect any current farm plate owners renewing their plates.

Some of the proof that would be accepted by the MTO includes a farm organisation membership card, a gross farm income exemption certificate or a letter from Agricorp with your Farm Business Registration number on it.

Those new rules went into effect January 1st.
