Supply-Managed Groups See Pressure On TPP Talks

The organisations representing this country's supply-managed farm commodities say they understand the level of pressure from our trading partners in the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations is increasing.

They say they also see the level of anxiety among supply-managed producers and industry partners intensifying.

But the dairy, poultry and egg groups say they support the government's policy of expanding market access, improving trade rules and preserving supply management.

They point out that policy has been followed in the negotiation of 12 trade agreements with 43 countries.

The groups also argue the claim that supply managed commodities are protectionist are unfounded.

In a joint statement released this week, they argue Canada currently provides more access to our markets than many other countries, including the U-S.

As an example, they point out Canada imports more chicken than 6 of the other countries involved in the TPP talks combined, including the U-S.
