Corn Production Increasing

Canadian farmers expect an increase in corn production and a decrease in wheat and soybean production this year.

That's according to survey results from Statistics Canada. The survey suggests total wheat production will be down almost 16 per cent this year. Although acreage is up 1.7 per cent, the average yield is expected to be down over 17 per cent.

National soybean production is expected to be down 3.2 per cent. Ontario production is expected to drop 10 per cent, with an over 4 per cent drop in harvested area and an almost 6 per cent drop in average yield.

National corn for grain production is expected to be up over 7 per cent to 12.3 million tonnes.

Ontario farmers are expecting a 7.4 per cent increase in production.

They told Statscan they expect to harvest 9.4 per cent more acres this year but are forecasting an almost 2 per cent decline in their average yield.

National barley production is expected to be up 2.6 per cent and oat production up 13.9 per cent over last year.
