Canadian Pork Production Up From Last Year

Canadian pork production is running 3.1 per cent ahead of last year at this time.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada says almost 1.4 million head have been slaughtered in federal plants to September 5. The department says Ontario slaughter is up 2.1 per cent. New Brunswick reported the biggest increase, year over year, at 9.9 per cent. Nova Scotia's 1 per cent was the lowest increase.

Hog slaughter in the U-S last week was 2.04 million head, down 6 per cent from the previous week, but only half a per cent lower than the same week last year. According to Ron Plain's Hog Outlook from the University of Missouri, the national negotiated barrow and gilt price last Friday was $64.48 per hundred, down $3.26 from the week before.

Plain also reports the average live slaughter weight of barrows and gilts in Iowa-Minnesota last week was up about 1/2 lb from the previous week but down almost 5 lbs from a year ago.

He says that was the 24th straight week with weights lighter than last year.
