NFU Adds It's Voice To TPP Criticism

The National Farmers Union isn't soothed by government assurances supply management will be defended in the Trans Pacific Partnership talks.

The NFU argues we heard the same thing during the CETA negotiations, which could end up costing Canadian dairy farmers and processors 9 per cent of their cheese market.

President Jan Slomp says New Zealand, Australia and the U-S are the ones pressuring Canada in the talks because they have embraced an export-oriented dairy strategy that has dramatically failed to serve their farmers.

The NFU claims the farm-gate price paid to New Zealand dairy farmers is one of the lowest in the world, yet New Zealand consumers pay some of the highest prices for milk of any country.
