Ontario Corn Planting Rolling, Little Soybean Planting So Far

OMAFRA estimates from 10 to 15 per cent of Ontario's corn crop has been planted.

While there's a lot of emphasis on early planting to capture the greatest yield potential, ministry specialists point out that soil conditions must also be suitable.

Very little soybean planting has been reported so far.

Seeding depth is a prime consideration for soybeans, with at least 1 inch recommended and from 1 and a quarter to 1 and a half inches as the soil warms up.

Canola planting has begun, but the ministry says progress is still slow.

OMAFRA expects about a 10 per cent increase in canola acreage in the province this year.

Weeds are now a top priority with the winter cereals.

Annual weeds are just beginning to emerge while many of the fall germinated weeds may already be beyond the stage for good weed control.

The ministry reports spring cereal planting is almost compete with acreage down from last year but comparable to 2013 and 2014 levels.

This week's Field Crop Report says winter kill on provincial forage stands remains low and is not expected to rise.
