Funding To Help Get Local Ontario Produce Into Subway Restaurants

Ontario grown tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and onions will be featured at Subway restaurants in the province during the harvest season.

The Greenbelt Fund is providing a 90 thousand dollar grant to Burnac Produce to help with that project.

It was one of ten grants the fund announced this week for Greater Golden Horseshoe organisations in support of projects to bring more local food to Ontario plates.

Another over 30 thousand dollars went to Durham Farm Connections and the Durham Region Federation of Agriculture.

They're joining forces to buy a new mobile education trailer for an on-going local food and farming literacy public education campaign in Durham Region.

And Sustain Ontario is getting 100 thousand dollars.

The organisation is going to work with local partners in Toronto, Peel Region and Thunder Bay to help teachers educate students about local food and its availability.

That program will involve 25 thousand students across 30 school communities.

The Greenbelt Fund has awarded 1 point 5 million dollars to projects across the province.

The Ontario government announced 6 million dollars for that fund over three years in 2015.
