Re-Opened Taiwan Market Could Boost Canadian Beef Sector Confidence

Taiwan has lifted its temporary ban on Canadian beef.

The ban followed last year's detection of an isolated case of BSE in Canada.

Before the ban, Taiwan was Canada's seventh-largest export market for beef with exports valued at 12 million dollars a year.

Canada Beef president Rob Meijer is welcoming the move.

He says it will help Canada beef increase the brand, value and loyalty for Canadian beef not only in Taiwan but leveraging it into Southeast Asia as well.

The president of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, Ron Darling, says this will help instill confidence in Canadian beef producers to grow their herds.

The CCA says the most significant remaining BSE related market restriction is getting full under-thirty-month beef access to the China market.
