OMAFRA: Think Twice About Your Fall Cut Of Hay

Farmers wanting to get a fall cut of hay in may want to think about that carefully.

OMAFRA says forages are plenty stressed from this summer's drought.

They note that there's been significant growth over the last two weeks, but getting an extra cut in could delay first cut next year.

The field crop team feels the tonnage gained in the fall could be less than the amount lost in the spring.

The ministry cautions against late cuttings of first year stands as they're not well established yet.

Producers must balance their immediate need for hay now with what they need for first cut.

The team says cutting as close to a killing frost as possible is the best way to reduce the chances of winterkill.

OMAFRA also suggests fertilizers be applied this fall to help make up for the stress of summer.

They say the extra boost of nitrogen should make plants sturdier before winter hits, giving them a head start next year.
