Soybean Yields Varying Directly With Rainfall

The summer's lack of rainfall has led to widely varying soybean yields across the province.

OMAFRA says those that received the least amount of rain are getting single digit yields while fields that got some timely moisture are seeing nearly 70 bushels an acre.

The field crop team notes seeds are of good quality but somewhat smaller than normal.

A little less than half of Ontario's soybeans are now harvested.

The ministry says while rain is now holding up the rest of soybean harvest, some farmers have turned to combining corn.

The team points out corn moisture is dryer than usual for this time of year.

They also note a significant number of fields have western bean cutworm damage.

If that's the case in your crop, OMAFRA suggests harvesting early to stop the growth of mould.

The ministry adds those that got their soybeans off have enjoyed good conditions for planting winter wheat as emergence has been occuring in less than a week.

The field team would like to remind producers of the importance of planting at a depth of 1" to reduce stand issues next spring.
