Farmers Asked to Comment on Soil Conservation Strategy

Farmers across the province are being asked to mark Ontario Agriculture Week by commenting on soil conservation.

OMAFRA is working on an Agricultural Soil Health and Conservation Strategy along with other ag groups, including the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association.

The discussion paper now available for comment is called Sustaining Ontario's Agricultural Soils: Towards a Shared Vision.

OSCIA President Gord Green says now is the time for producers to voice their opinions, not after new policies are put in place.

He adds it's easy to state good things about soil health, but a philosophy is needed to truly promote positive change.

The OSCIA shares evidence that changes in farming practices may need to change.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada estimates 82 per cent of Ontario's crop land is losing soil organic carbon.

AAFC also reports 54 per cent of land has soil erosion above its annual rate of regeneration.

Both the association and the ministry are encouraging farmers to review the paper on OMAFRA's website.
