CFA Weighs In On Carbon Taxes

The President of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture has weighed in with his thoughts on the new carbon tax.

Ron Bonnett says setting a price on carbon will create both challenges and opportunities for Canadian agriculture producers.

He feels Canada will be at a competitive disadvantage as most agricultural commodity prices are set globally and other competing countries have no plans to implement carbon taxes.

The CFA notes the ag industry has already made impressive gains in improving the environment, which keeps it poised for sustainable growth as the world's population continues to escalate.

The federation is still pressing for investments in agricultural technology and research which will benefit producers and save on greenhouse emissions .

Bonnett says farmers will require special consideration as carbon pricing regulations take effect.

He wants policies to be developed in close consultation with ag producers to address any additional farm expenses.
