Non-GMO and Organic Seed Demand Outselling Supply

With an increasing need to supply the market with non-GMO and organic products, seed companies are doing what they can to supply producers with what they need for quality crops.

A recent study by Canada's Organic Trade Association has found more millennials are shifting their diets towards organic, with 1 in 5 buying organic products regularly.

Brad Cooper, Research Manager for De Dell Seeds, says sales are at record levels and continually rising.

"I definitely think the way it's going, it's not going to turn around and go backwards any time soon. How high it goes I don't know but there's definitely a huge demand for it," says Cooper.

"The demand is being filled a bit from off-shore as well. We can't keep up with the demand in North America right now."

Cooper points out farms of all sizes are growing organic crops . Some of his customers have hobby farms of 10 acres, others are organic dairy farms covering up to 1000 acres.

He notes the price of the seed is higher than of conventional corn as it costs more to produce it.

But he adds farmers selling the grain definitely get more for their corn than conventional farmers do.
