Cattle TB Quarantine Hits Fifty Herds

The cattle quarantine for bovine tuberculosis in western Canada continues to grow.

While the confirmed number of TB cases remains at six, the number of herds under quarantine is now at 50.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says all are scheduled for on-farm testing which should be done by early January.

CFIA Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Harpeet Kochar says the latest round of slaughter showed some positive results.

"We are looking for any clinical signs or any lesions from the tuberculosis," says the vet.

"In the last round which we had, we did not see any signs of the disease, which is a good thing at the point where we are in terms of the investigation."

Dr. Kochar says the agency is now working closely with those in the industry and several associations to find a biosecure place where they can move quarantined calves indoors.

Temperatures in southeast Alberta have now dipped below minus 20.

The Chief Veterinary Officer also notes the TB investigation still hasn't reached the point where the CFIA can release any herds from the quarantine.
