Alberta Ranchers Getting TB Compensation Soon

Ranchers in Southeastern Alberta hemmed in by the bovine tuberculosis quarantine should have compensation before the end of the year.

Barbara Duckworth of the Western Producer reports the Alberta Financial Services Corporation is already processing requests for assistance.

Agriculture Canada is encouraging any affected farmers who haven't applied for funding to do so as soon as possible to help with cash flow pressure.

Approximately 26,000 animals remain in the quarantine.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has released seven herds from the quarantine over the past two weeks but notes the investigation could last until March as tests take eight to 12 weeks to culture before results can be determined.

The number of confirmed infected cows remains at six.
