Ontario Pork Looks Forward After Pig Watering Trial

The chair of Ontario Pork says farm organizations will continue with the broader public to ensure food safety.

Eric Schwindt was disappointed in Thursday's ruling after a judge ruled a Toronto are woman was not willfully interfering with a farmer's property by giving water to pigs on a truck headed to slaughter in June of 2015.

"We are always concerned about food safety." says Schwindt. "That's top of mind of everything we do. The justice supported our regulations and industry so that in this case there is no criminal conviction. But he was very clear in saying that in another case there may be a very different outcome."

Schwindt says they are looking forward now.

"We want to continue working with our partners," said Schwindt. "That's our customers, out transporters, government to continue to produce safe quality food."

Farm & Food Care Ontario, the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and the Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario were also watching the outcome of the trial.
