In an open letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Dairy Farmers of Canada warn the PM that the current text of the new USMCA agreement contains a provision that would grant the US oversight into the administration of the Canadian dairy system, something they claim will undermine Canadian sovereignty.
The open letter, which is signed by DFC's President and the chairs of all 10 provincial dairy associations, states that government officials had assured dairy farmers that the issue of the US oversight had not been agreed to by Canada, and would not be part of the final agreement.
Dairy Farmers are concerned they have not seen a final draft of the agreement with the oversight clause excluded. They're asking Trudeau to not sign the USMCA until the clause granting the US oversight of the Canadian Dairy system is removed, saying quote-"Canada's dairy farmers are counting on you to remain steadfast".
The National Farmer's Union also urged Trudeau to not sign the deal in its present form, noting the current text differs from what American negotiators agreed upon.
