Questions about meat processing capacity

Huron County Warden Jim Ginn says one of the meetings he had at this week's AMO Conference was with Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs officials.

Ginn says he wanted to talk about capacity for processing beef and pork.

"We wanted to have a discussion with that, there abattoirs continue to close at a very fast rate and something needs to be done about that to affect the agricultural community and those that like to have and support local food," said Ginn. "You need a certain amount of size to compete, but if you offer good services, I think there's still a livelihood to be had there. What we'll discuss with OMFRA really will be largely regulations. It seems to be part of the problem for abattoirs closing."

What he specifically wanted to discuss with OMARA officials was regulations and he points to that as a big part of the reason abattoirs are closing.
