Chatham-Kent Wary Of Tire-Kicking

The latest rumours that Plymouth Whalers ownership is looking at relocating to Chatham is a song Chatham-Kent officials and staff have heard before.

The glaring issue that comes up when OHL rumors fly is the lack of an appropriate venue, and Mayor Randy Hope says it takes capital to bring in and maintain an OHL team.

"Right now I'm not aware of any funding programs specifically from the senior levels of government," says CAO Don Shropshire. "That would be something other communities have done in the past and that's how they've got the funding.

Shropshire adds that Chatham has been identified as a hockey town, which is why teams like the Plymouth Whalers and Erie Otters have talked about relocating to CK in the past.
