A massive 150-vehicle pileup in Michigan has claimed the life of a Canadian trucker.
Michigan State Police tells BlackburnNews.com a trucker from Quebec died as a result of the collision on I-94 Friday morning in eastern Kalamazoo County, near Galesburg. Police aren't releasing the trucker's name at this time.
Lieutenant Richard Pazder says the highway may not reopen until late Friday night or early Saturday morning. "Initially it was obviously the hazardous material situation. We had a semi-truck that was on fire that had fireworks in it," says Pazder. "We had a semi-truck that was on fire that had a product called formic acid. We had a car hauler that was on fire. So all those present obviously a significant hazard to responders."
Police are currently combing the scene, investigating the cause. "We don't know if we're going to find additional (victims) and we certainly hope that we do not have additional fatalities," says Pazdar.
He says ten people have been transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.
Pazder says blowing snow and whiteout conditions played a factor in today's pileup.
