Two Michigan residents are charged after the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel was shut down for almost three hours.
The drama began to unfold Tuesday evening when a guard on the Canadian side of the tunnel ordered the driver of a 2004 Dodge Durango to go to secondary inspection. During a search of the vehicle, Canada Border Services Agency officers found a bag containing a suspicious device prompting officials to evacuate the tunnel plaza.
The Windsor Police Explosives Disposal Unit used their robot to get a closer look, and discovered it was a commercial grade smoke bomb.
Officials also found several weapons in the Durango including two butterfly knives and a set of brass knuckles that are illegal in Canada.
Police charged a 29-year-old man from Clarkston, Michigan with one count of possession of a prohibited weapon and one count of importing a prohibited weapon into Canada. An 18-year-old man from Alba, Michigan faces three counts of each charge.
The charges are not related to the smoke bomb because it's classified as a firework.
