A new report from the Automotive Policy Research Centre out of Hamilton shows governments lost out on $7-billion in tax revenue because of the downturn in the auto industry.
Young families in Windsor are taking the biggest hit according to the report. It's suggested those families ages 25-34 years old in Windsor have seen the worst annual dollar decline of about $18,000 between 2000 and 2012.
Project lead Dr. Brendan Sweeney says auto towns like Oshawa, London and Cambridge weren't as impacted. “They really followed the provincial average on a lot of things quite closely. When you look at Windsor, you really see a very significant drop from the early 2000s.”
Those under 25 years old have seen the largest percentage drop of about a third of annual income.
The report shows Windsor has lost 11,900 of the 43,000 lost automotive manufacturing jobs in the province between 2001 and 2013.
