Council Adjusts Tax Policy

Chatham-Kent is looking to attract industrial and commercial business by adjusting its tax policy for 2015.

Industrial taxes will decrease 9% while commercial taxes will drop by 0.5%. This will be reflected in residential taxes, but those will still be lower because of recent reassessments.

Mayor Randy Hope says the change for homeowners is minimal, and works towards the greater good. "It's pain that won't be seen. You're not getting as much [money] back, but what it does is spur the economy throughout the whole community."

This is just the second time Chatham-Kent has altered its tax policy since amalgamation, the other being in 2009.
