Being Ready For The Worst

It's Emergency Preparedness Week and the emergency coordinator in Chatham-Kent says it's a good time to think about making a safety kit that includes food, water, batteries, and other essential items.

Alan DeVillaer says while this area might not have the threat of an event like a major earthquake, there could be other serious issues like weather concerns and train crashes.

"Three days or 72 hours may not be enough anymore. I really like people to have up to seven days if not more of food, water, medications, cash money, anything you may need," he says. "We're finding people are carrying around small kits in their cars now, also social media has really caught on in the amount of information that might be available to everyone."

Over the last few years, DeVillaer says floods in Alberta, power outages and displacement by train crashes have left Canadians out of their homes for weeks.
