Planting Progress Speeds Up

Cold wet weather in April delayed the start of planting, but farmers are catching up quickly.

Area farmer and provincial director of the Grain Farmers of Ontario Mark Huston says once the weather warmed up, conditions were very good.

"It's been moving along much better than last year. A good chunk of the corn is in and some guys have already switched over to beans and got a few beans in," he says. "The top (of the soil) had gotten quite dry but underneath there was still a decent amount of moisture. Planting conditions were as good as we've seen them in the last few years, easily."

The provincial agriculture ministry estimates more than 60% of the corn crop has been planted in Chatham-Kent.
