The federal leader of the New Democratic Party is using a stop in Windsor to sell a proposed tax cut for small and medium-sized businesses.
Thomas Mulcair pulled the taps at Walkerville Brewery before telling reporters his party isn't interested in big tax cuts for huge corporations. "80% of new jobs are created by small and medium-sized business," he says. "It's businesses like this one that could use a break."
Mulcair was joined by NDP candidates in Windsor-Tecumseh and Essex, Cheryl Hardcastle and Tracey Ramsey, along with Windsor West MP Brian Masse, who has introduced a private members bill to help micro-breweries specifically. "It will provide tax relief basically anywhere from $1,000 to $8,000," explains Masse. "They can choose from there whether they're going to hire more, whether they're going to advertise more, whether they're going to research and develop more."
Mulcair says it will give micro-breweries a rapid return on their investment. "This is very investment heavy," he says. "It would allow them to recoup the cost of capital when they're putting in new installations."
Mulcair also plans to attend a fundraiser for area NDP riding associations at 6pm tonight at Brews and Cues in Tecumseh.
