An open discussion on diversity and mental health issues can help students deal with concerns.
That's a finding from a brainstorming session by students from both of the St. Clair Catholic District School Board's secondary schools looking specifically at themes of respect and inclusion.
Kelsey O'Flynn from UCC in Chatham says it's about helping students across the system. "About raising awareness for other schools dealing with different things like mental illness and equality that's becoming a bit more common in schools."
Amber Huard from St. Patrick's in Sarnia says there are still difficult issues but believes they are getting a little better. "Because we have a program called I Matter at the school and people go around and talk to the Grade 9 class and kind of educate them on it."
School board officials say the ideas discussed will be used in the well-being programs in the schools.
