Fire officials across Chatham-Kent are getting ready to knock on doors making sure people know carbon dioxide detectors, as well as smoke alarms, are now mandatory in most homes.
Public Educator Ashley Scott says fire crews will also be discussing fire safety and evacuation plans as part of the Alarmed For Life program.
"They are educating the residents on the importance of having a working smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm in their home," she says. "If the resident doesn't, they can then loan the resident an alarm. They have about a week follow up period so they can go out and purchase the alarm for themselves."
The loaner alarms were donated by the Insurance Bureau of Canada and Union Gas.
