Some Pension Concerns Still Expressed

The Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce says it is encouraged the province seems to have listened to some concerns about the Ontario Pension plan, but cost may still be an issue.

Chief executive Gail Bishop says in some cases companies offering defined contribution plans will be able to opt out and there is a reasonable phase in period.

"Some easing of this program, (but) there is no doubt there is going to be a cost to business if we undertake this," she says. "Defined contribution plans are going to be accepted in certain conditions and percentages and depending on the size of the businesses they are going to have some alleviating of time-lines."

However Bishop says there will still be a cost.

The plan is scheduled to take effect at the beginning of 2017 but contributions would be phased in until they reach 1.9% from both the employer and employee by 2021.
