GM Smokestack Falls Without Notice

Public safety may have been ignored when the GM smokestack came down, as city officials investigate why emergency responders weren't ever notified.

Neighbours say the large smokestack came down at around 3pm Tuesday, following multiple failed attempts last month.

Chief building official John Revell says if explosives were used, the city needed to be notified two days in advance.

"There are penalties under the bylaw and our investigation will go beyond that," says Revell. "We'll be looking at Building Code Act violations and looking at the professional associations of the people involved (who) have allowed it to take place without following the bylaw."

Demolition company Jones Group declined to comment today, saying a formal statement will be released Wednesday.

Revell says no injuries have been reported. He says the town will be issuing orders Wednesday on what can and can't take place during the investigation.

If explosives were not used, Revell says the demolition company isn't required to give notice.
