Cat Population Not High Everywhere

The cat population in Chatham-Kent is overwhelming rural property owners and the SPCA but there are other parts of the province where they are in demand.

"People are scheduled for the next several weeks to bring in cats that have been either dumped at their properties or that have just shown up at their house that they can't look after," says Chatham-Kent branch Community Relations Coordinator Robyn Brady.

However in some other areas adoptions outnumber abandoned cats.

"In the last nine months of this year we have sent close to 250 animals to other shelters in the province," she says. "Mainly cats, there are some shelters that can't keep stock of cats."

Brady says if the shelter can send animals to areas where they have a better chance of being adopted it frees up resources to deal with those that remain.
