Provincial Policy Could Hold Back GDC

A new provincial policy could put a snag in plans for an industrial Park in Blenheim.

Municipal officials say the Provincial Nominee Program Policy contains a linguistics rule that requires businesses to be fluent in English within two years. The Ontario Government has yet to release concrete details about the policy, only a summary thus far. As a result, Economic Development

Director Michael Burton says they, along with developer Brightenview, are unsure of the future.

"Until we definitively know what the provincial policy entails, and what the small print defines, then we're not sure if they can proceed or not," he says.

Burton says the linguistics limitations could be a big drawback, especially considering they want to attract small international companies.

"They may or may not speak English, the children may speak it or not. We need to talk to the province and get the details straight in our heads, then talk to Brightenview," he adds.

Municipal officials are meeting with the province on November 30 to go over the finer points of the deal.
