High Winds Do Damage, Prompt Warning (Gallery)

The Essex Region Conservation Authority has issued a warning for residents in Leamington, Kingsville, and Pelee Island about possible flooding and erosion.

In the city, high winds caused a hollow tree to topple over onto a parked car. Police had the 1000-block of Pellissier St. blocked off for a short time while crews removed the large tree.

Wind gusts hitting 80 km/h are forecast for the region, and ERCA says the waves could cause damage.

Director of Watershed Management Tim Byrne says wave action is the key issue.

"Spray and splash overtopping of break walls could cause structural issues for houses, especially those 15m or closer to the lake," he says.

The main trouble areas are the western shore of Leamington, near Point Pelee, Kingsville's eastern shore, and the west and south shorelines of Pelee Island.

The wind is also forcing changes to the Pelee Island ferry schedule. All ferry service for Thursday is cancelled due to wind. Friday's 8am ferry is also cancelled and more information will be available tomorrow at 8:30am.
