Pelee Island Needs Erosion Cash

The mayor of Pelee Island hopes to enlist some help to deal with shoreline erosion and flooding on the island.

Rick Masse heads to the Ontario West Municipal Conference in London Friday.

The island's town council is looking for what grants it can apply for to cover the $5-million cost of fixing up shoreline protections. That figure includes the cost of emergency repairs on a break wall off the southwest shore, which is expected to cost $1.6-million.

"We've just spent over a million dollars putting a brand new road down that stretch, and the lake is starting to encroach in that area," says Masse. "It's just a matter of time before it takes the new road out."

Flooding is the problem on the northwest corner of the island.

"When the winds come out of the northeast, most of the households up there, they tend to get flooded during the period of a storm event," Masse adds.

Town council has looked into the possibility of applying for a 50-50 grant through the Essex Region Conservation Authority, but Masse says the town doesn't have the $600,000 required to pay its share.
