Windsor still doesn't know how many refugees it's getting as part of the federal government's plan to bring in 10,000 people fleeing conflict in Syria by the end of the year.
Mayor Drew Dilkens attended a forum on the crisis in Ottawa hosted by Governor General David Johnston on Tuesday.
Dilkens tells BlackburnNews.com one of the main messages from the forum was to get community members involved in helping refugees transition into their new communities.
"Making sure the community is supportive of what's going on and making sure that we're developing the list of people who want to help and offer support," says Dilkens. "That's so crucial."
Expanded support through the city's 311 service will help identify those who can help, either by giving their time or through donations.
Dilkens didn't get any new timelines at the forum and says the city is in a "bit of a waiting game" when it comes to planning for refugee intake.
"We're hoping for that information as soon as possible so we can just get a leg up in terms of the planning required to welcome the refugees to our community," says Dilkens.
The new Liberal government plans to bring in a total of 25,000 new Syrian refugees by the end of February 2016.
