Good Season For Self Cut Trees

It has been a good year for Christmas tree farms especially those who allow people to cut their own trees.

Matthew Whitney grows trees on more than ten acres of land at Puddleford Tree Farm south of Kent Bridge.

He says even though fields don't have the snow covered Christmas look, the weather this year has been perfect for his business.

"Snow will bring people out, but if you've got a nice day people will come out and cut a tree. If it's rainy and windy I think they'd rather stay home," he says. "Typically the last weekend in November and the first weekend in December are the biggest weekends and then it tapers off from there. There still will be some customers this weekend, but the majority of them already have their trees."

Whitney says it takes about ten years from planting to harvest and the trees are pruned each year to end up with the right shape.
