A theft of $25,000 in diamond rings from a Chatham jewellery store has landed two people behind bars.
Shortly after 5pm on Thursday, a man entered Affinity Distinctive Jewellery inquiring about engagement rings. When the salesperson turned away the man grabbed both jewellery trays and jumped into a waiting vehicle that sped off.
About an hour later, the Pontiac Grand Am, which was stolen from Windsor earlier in the day, was spotted on Tecumseh Line, south of Tilbury. A police chase led authorities through a field and nearly led to a cruiser being struck. The chase was called off for public safety.
A short time later the vehicle was stopped in Belle River and two people were arrested.
A 30-year-old Windsor man was allegedly found in possession of methamphetamine and additionally charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and drug possession.
A 34-year-old Windsor woman was charged with possession possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, theft over $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
Police aren't saying if the rings were recovered.
Both were held pending a bail hearing.
